Trip 3 (canoe) – DKM Round Tour

A three-day tour in the waters for Sweden’s biggest canoe race, Dalsland Kanot Maraton/Dalsland Canoe Marathon (DKM).

For practical reasons we have chosen to locate the starting place at our establishment of Silverlake in Kråkviken. Naturally, it is possible to carry out the tour according to the DKM route. If that is desired, transportation will then be required to Baldersnäs and the finish will instead be in Bengtsfors. After provisioningyou will place your canoe in Västra Silen and begin your trip in the Dalsland waters. Approximately 5km into your trip you will pass Vårvik church (built 1840). The church’s location allows you to go ashoreand, if you’re lucky, it will be open and you can take a look in.

The journey then continues northwards towards Gustavsfors; via a 3km long canal you will arrive at the old industrial village. In Gustavsfors there are restaurants and grocery stores. After the locks and the extremely beautiful journey out of Gustavsfors, the trip turns southwards for approximately 20 kilometres of paddling in Lelången. In central Bengtsfors you’ll find provisions of all kinds. Bengtsbrohöljen’s waters are the next lake on your tour. Soon after the lock in Bengtsfors you’ll see the start- and finish-bridge for the canal boats that frequent Dalsland’s Canal.

“Höljen” is the only lake on your tour that doesn’t form part of the DKM’s route. The lake is only 3km long but the water level difference between Bengtsbrohöljen and Laxsjön means that you must pass five locks. Out in Laxsjön you can see Baldersnäs manor house on your right after a couple of kilometre’s paddling. The park belonging to the manor is well worth seeing and definitely worth a visit. A further 5 kilometres of paddling and you will have reached Skåpafors, where a longer (400m) lift awaits. At the top of the hill there is an ice-cream and hot-dog stand, before you continue in yet another of Dalsland’s lakes, Svärdlången, which offers fantastic paddling in lovely water.

After around 14 kilometres of paddling you will reach Skifors, where (after a lift of 150 metres) you will place your canoe in Västra Silen again. From there, only 4 kilometres remain before you are back at Silverlake Camp.

Overnight stop/resting places: Throughout the trip there are various options for overnight stops. Besides designated rest stops/prepared campsites that are situated along our lakes, Silverlake Camp, Gustavsfors, Bengtsfors and Baldersnäs all also offer accommodation. Note that for overnight stays at previously mentioned rest stops/campsites you need a Naturvårdskort (Nature Conservation Card), which costs 40 kronor per person per night.

Map: Canoe area Dalsland-Nordmarken

Fishing: Plentiful fishing waters await; you can buy a fishing licence from us or from other distributors(see separate brochure)

Provisions:Basic provisions are available to buy at Silverlake Camp, in addition to grocery stores in Gustavsfors and Bengtsfors

Other things of interest: Locks; you pass 8 obligatory locks on the trip. 10 ticket packs are available to buy from us, otherwise you can pay at each lock.

The Silverlake Special (canoe)

An approximately 4-day long trip, mainly through sparsely built-up areas and with challenges such as flowingwater and lack of designated resting places. Silverlake Camp, Kråkviken, makes up the starting place and Västra Silen is the first lake on the adventure. At the end, the tour requires transportation from the end point of “väster kraftverkdammen” in Forsbacka (circa 7km west of Åmål). Since “the challenge” provides limited possibilities for overnight stops for groups, the tour is primarily for single canoes in search of solitude and tranquillity.

Your challenge begins with sights in the north-easterly direction and, after a couple of hours of paddling, you will reach Krokfors and its two locks. Before you go through the lock, make sure to cast a glance right across the lake, where Vårvik’s church (named as one of Sweden’s most beautiful) can be seen. In Krokfors you can perhaps buy some form of morale-boosting refreshment and maybe even, depending on the season, salmon. After completing lockage, you are into the next waters on your trip. Östra Silen, an extremely beautiful lake, offers a number of designated places for overnight stops, unlike other lakes on the tour – so allow yourself a little luxury and stay overnight at one of these.

Then, you will continue in a north-easterly direction and gradually pass the northern peninsula of Hökenäs, where the direction will become easterly. Before you reach the next island, Hängestensön, you will pass the borderto our neighbouring province, Värmland. Keep going in an easterly direction and aim, with help from the map, towards the village Intakan, which is the end pointin Östra Silen. You will pass the Stora Trollön’snorthern point (possible camping site) and subsequently reach the lake’s eastern side. Follow the coastline to Boviken, where you decide whether you want to lift the canoe in the bay’ssouthern end, or paddle around Skogsnäs. No matter your decisions, a longer land transport awaits (approx. 5km). The land transport stretch takes you to Dalsjön’s northern end, where you return to your canoe in Dalsland’s waters. Southbound paddling in the wilderness, take the time to listen to the silence during the journey to the end point, Kvarnen, and a shorter lift over the road. Hugnerudsälven is a “with the current” challenge, which, depending on the height of the tide, can be quite difficult. At low tide in the river you need land transport for around 1 kilometre from Kvaranen to Hugnerudsviken and a suitable place to return to your canoe.

You’ve now entered Ömmeln, where you after some southward paddling once again will float eastward. That is if you don’t chose to spend the night at Hollsten, which is the last fixed campsite along the trip. Pass in between Storön and Vargön and aim for the lake’s southeast end. Note the railway, which is a part of the former Åmål-Årjäng railway. Or “Svanskogsbanan” as it’s called. The railway, which during the summer is used by steam locomotives between Svanskog and Åmål, will after Ömmeln stick the remaining lakes’ west side.

The current water level in the river between Ömmeln and Övre Kalven decides if you are able to paddle through it. If not, it will be an 800 metre long land transport to the northwestern part of Över Kalven, where you can get back in your canoe. You will reach the lake southeastern part via Kroppasundet and a further kilometre's paddling in an easterly direction. A shorter lift, over the road, means that you then set your canoe in Nedre Kalven and the challenge's last stage. If you want transport from the final finishing point, it is a good idea to call the transporter now. You steer yourself straight south now, and after a full hour's paddling, you can see Forsbackabaden. Continue straight under the two low bridges towards the end point on the right of the power station. Now you have reached the goal for "The Silverlake Special".
